Just put in my notice 30 minutes ago at my current gig and have a start date of October 12th 2, 000 miles away in San Jose.
It’ll be a stressful move but m
an am I excited!
Thanks for coming along for the ride and all the helpful words along the way Oppo - you’re good people!
PS - if you want to buy a 71 Honda or a 90 Mazda pickup in Missouri let me know. Neither are coming with me.

It’s pronounced cali-four-nye-ay
Also it's all on fire I would not recommend going there.

Also you’re bankrupt the moment you enter San Jose. And the locals will murder you if you try to build a house .

I miss having a reason to visit SF for work. Good luck!

Congrats on the new gig!
Despite what I said via email, I am still thinking about your bike . Don’t hold it for me by any means.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 16:44 |

Congrats! What’s your situation with the insane housing market here?
Nice to hear about another SJ Oppo. Hopefully Covid dies down sometime soon so that we can hold an inaugural Bay Area Oppo meet
.

I’m in Marin, it’s much hotter in San Jose, I have had to go work on shows there. There are some good driving roads down that way.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 16:47 |

Also everyone in LA is way hotter than you
![]() 09/21/2020 at 16:51 |

Californy is the place you oughta be!
Edit: I originally posted the video of the show opening, but then I found this Flatt and Scruggs performance and it’s way better.
Congrats, and good luck with the move!

Congrats! Such a beautiful area up there.
Here’s to new beginnings.

I moved from Missouri to Seattle 12 years ago and the cost-of-living difference was a nightmare for a few years. I can’t imagine what it’s like moving to San Jose.
San Jose isn’t as bad as people say. 101 is a great way to get to work, as long as you schedule your commute between 1:00 am - 4:00 am.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:12 |
|
Thanks! That’s what started this a year ago, a few work trips that made me love the area.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:13 |

Thanks! That’s an excellent video for this
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:14 |

if you’re in “The Golden Triangle” then the expressways are pretty good, but otherwise yeah
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:14 |

Thanks! I’ll be in corporate housing for a few weeks while looking for a house to rent. Then the Mrs will join me.
I look forward to a meetup of the Bay Area Oppos!
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:17 |

Yeah, it’s less hot than here in Missouri though so I’ll take it. We regularly hit 100+ with 80% humidity for most of July and August.
Not sure where we’ll be living yet, thinking Fremont at the moment but we’ll see.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:18 |

Thanks!
Let me know if you change your mind. Or if you’d want to trade that Zuma for it. I’d be looking for a Scooter out there anyway. I’ve got it listed at $3k at the moment and got a few bites nothing serious yet. Probably knock it down to $2500 in another week and get her sold.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:19 |

Thank you! That’s what I’m hoping, a new start for me and the Mrs careers that will be an adventure but should be a ton of fun.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:19 |

Thanks! I’ll be closer to your neck of the woods and have wanted to wander New Mexico for years so a road trip down your way will be in order eventually.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:21 |

I ride a motorcycle and plan on doing it more out there so between access to carpool lanes and lane splitting I figure it’ll be manageable.
We almost ended up in Seattle 6 years ago but had an offer here with a bit more salary than what I was being offered there so we stayed.
Housing budget definitely triples, but tired of living in a cheap as hell place now . Got a raise to match the cost of living increase too which definitely helps.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:22 |

Congrats - San Jose is a pleasant town, hope your new gig works out great.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:22 |

Motorcycle gives me access to carpool lanes and lane splitting so I figure it’ll be alright.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. It’s stressful as my job is crazy stable a nd I’m well paid but it was time for a move.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:25 |

Congratulations on the next step in your life’s journey. I wish you a happy and productive new life on the other end of the country. It’ll be hard to adjust but the myriad new opportunities will be worth it. You’ve got this!
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:26 |

They’re already way hotter than me. I’m from rural Missouri, which is basically the west Appalachias
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:27 |

Welcome (soon) to California, please help make it better, many (most?) of the turds here suck. Indeed SJ is a cool place, what industry are you in?
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:29 |
|
Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it.
It’s good for me as I’m in Tech and for the Mrs as she works in Non-profit Healthcare. The change will be big from quiet and cheap Missouri but we’re pretty ready for it.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:33 |
|
Hopefully I don’t suck too much and will bring up the average. I’ve managed to grow up in Missouri and not become a racist asshole so that’s a decent start.
I work in IT, the last few years in Physical Security Infrastructure. Think large organizations with 10's of thousands of cameras, dozens of offices and 50k+ employees. It’s been a strange niche in Tech but fun and interesting.

Assuming you are coming across on I-80 I’ll meet you in Salt Lake and take that Mazda PU off your hands...I might be joking or actually serious.. anyway congrats on the move and I hope it goes well for you. I really like the weather and culture in Northern california, there are a lot of people tho and tesla’s are like every other car on the road these days.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:46 |

It’s far rustier than what you usually find in Montana. St Louis is definitely in the rust belt, it’s workable but some rust through on the bed and scale underneath.
I’d classify it as a beater/work truck that has a few years of life left in it.
That being said it is the unusual combination of a B2600i with a 5 speed, 4x4 and extended cab.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:48 |
|
Our current beater truck is a 1990 Isuzu, it has crash damage and the clutch is on it’s last legs...
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:49 |

Can be a change for the better, but you've got to actively make that change a good one. Get to know a new group of friends, establish yourself at your job and at home, just actively keep on top of the little things that will mount up with a big change. You'll do great!
![]() 09/21/2020 at 17:53 |
|
My main vehicle I’ll be driving across I-80 is a TDI Sportwagen that’ll already be towing a Motorcycle on a trailer. Renting a truck to drag it all would cost me more than selling the Mazda is worth. If I had a truck or SUV instead of my Jetta I’d definitely drag it to you though.
I am looking to get rid of the Jetta and replace it with a 4R unner or Sequoia but looking for a rust free west coast one to do so with.

SJ gets very hot, but it is dry. They got over 1oo this year if we were in the high 90s a couple times.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:02 |
|
I’m used to nasty summers and winters so the Bay Area will be a pleasant respite for us. The temp here breaks 100 a couple dozen times a summer with heat indexes north of 115. The dry heat of the west is much more pleasant. We also frequently get spells of a week or more where it doesn’t break 1 0 F and it spends most of January and Feb rarely breaking 35.
The nice weather is definitely part of why we’re moving.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:13 |

So, Google or Apple. :-P
I work in Mountain view, but live in seattle. I’ll relo one day...maybe.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:21 |
|
Lol. Neither right now. I did interview at both FB and Apple but neither worked out quite right. I’m working for a company that does a lot of contracting in the area (Google being one of them) but also a lot of DOD work. I’m coming from quasi-government with a lot of experience in the specific sector they’re looking to grow in (physical security) so this is a pretty good fit. I’ll be on the team doing a lot of infrastructure and solutions design, should be a lot of fun!
Seattle was also in the list of places we we re looking, it isn’t a large enough population center to be high on the list for my wife’s career so Bay Area won out.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:27 |
|
Yeah, physical security is a bigger and bigger issue these days (think YouTube shooting a few years ago)
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:29 |
|
Have you been involved in any investigations? Those could get interesting.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:33 |
|
Yeah, it's a sector that has just exploded in the last few years. I started my current job almost 6 years ago and thought I'd be there for 6 months before I got bored.

No no, transplants and city slickers are supposed to say “ Cali” so we know they ain’t from ‘round these parts.

Nothing I can talk about on Oppo. Definitely encountered some interest problems in high security areas.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 18:59 |

You’re still definitely better off buying a newer bike. If you want that sweet 70's coolness though I’m here to enable you :)

I am so internally conflicted ... I just reread your email ... It’s such a bad idea, and yet so tempting at the same time :)
![]() 09/21/2020 at 19:10 |

Yeah, I can’t argue with that one bit. She’s 50 years old so reliability will not be her strong suit , but there are also few things cooler (in my opinion).

Congratulations! Better SJ than anywhere north and below the G olden G ate, you can escape to the beach , mountains , or good roads pretty easily from there. T he deal is, n ew residents have to tell everyone it sucks here . The following reasons are preapproved for distribution : earthquakes, climate change. drought, fires , loud vegans, potholes, mountain lions, gun rights, the California Air Resources Board, bears, taxes, Prius drivers, tech bros , house prices, Tesla zealots, avocado toast, water rights, fancy coffee with long names and designs in the foam and stuff , h azy tropical citrus IPAs, Google buses, San Francisco liberals, Orange County conservatives , gas prices, I-5, 405, Devin Nunes, Nancy Pelosi , raccoons, and... bicyclists.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 19:47 |

Thanks!
I’m sure there will be things there that suck, your list definitely made me laugh, but I’m game for the change in scenery and am very okay with most of the well known negatives out there. I do laugh when people complain about the weather though. We have miserable weather 3/4 of the year here in Missouri.
Under 200 miles to Yosemite and under 250 to Tahoe, an hour to the beach and so on make me very excited for the outdoor opportunities there. I’m sure that I will grumble about the amount of people, but I’ll happily live with it.

Shh don’t tell anyone it’s good here!

Be careful with the lane splitting. There are a lot of people new to the area who don’t know how to handle it. I travel to Mountain View regularly and I’m used to it. I know that if I’m in the HOV lane in stop-and-go traffic, I should stay to the left almost riding on the shoulder to give more room for motorcycles to pass on the right.
I’ve seen too many motorcycles that have close calls with driver who either don’t know what they are doing or feel offended by motorcycles passing them. Personally, I’m happy to let motorcycles pass me when I’m in a car. That’s one less car on the road I have to sit behind.
If you are with one of the tech companies, they tend to have a bonus system that vests over five years. The good news is that after you have been there a while, the bonuses can significantly help the cost of living situation. The bad news is that if you leave, you lose any unvested bonus which can be significant.

prepare to spend every weekend this winter in Tahoe. Kirkwood, Squaw, Heavenly’s back bowls!
![]() 09/21/2020 at 20:51 |
|
I’m not a skier, but expect that to change. I live in Missouri so we’re 1000 miles away from any decent skiing.
![]() 09/21/2020 at 20:55 |

I will definitely ease into it, thanks for the advice . Same goes here for motorcycle accidents though, see lots of stupid drivers and riders . We also just repealed our helmet law which makes me scream inside my head every time I leave the house now.
One of the times I was in SF I rented a scooter and quickly got addicted to the awesomeness that is lane splitting. I was waiting in line at a light and someone passed between the lanes and I remembered it was legal!
Not a tech company right now, maybe eventually. I just hit 5 years as an employee at my current job which kicked in a good deal of benefits so I’m used to the long term vest strategy.

St Louis has been good to me, and I grew up about an hour southwest but I’m ready to move on . I’m really excited for what California has to offer me. Looking forward to the mountains, oceans and little rust!

You’ll love it. The food is incredible too. I had a Triumph motorcycle back then, but a car will work too.

I don’t have a Triumph but I do have a Honda motorcycle. I’m planning on regularly exercising it while there.

I grew up in the Midwest (I didn’t mind the humid summers, but I d on’t do well in cold weather) , and I live in SJ now. The weather here is quite nice. It gets hot in the summer, but not like Arizona level of hot. Also, it rains a fair bit in the winter, so our garden does really in the winter months.

A lot of the forests around SJ just burned, so you should be good for a few years before it burns again.
